In the days of the Israelites, written contracts were not common. Instead, vows were the closest equivalent. Vows were of greater significance than mere promises and held both legal and moral consequences when broken.
Num. 30:1-2 “And Moses spake unto the heads of the tribes concerning the children of Israel, saying, This is the thing which the LORD hath commanded. If a man vow a vow unto the LORD, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth.”
LESSON - Although a man’s word is not held to the same standard today as in the OT, maybe it should. The Bible is clear, Mt. 5:37 “But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.” Let your yes be yes and your no be no. Be a man or woman of your word. Your word reveals your integrity!
