Moses had already given Isreal God‘s law, but now God instructs them on how it is to be implemented and enforced. God never intended for Israel to have kings. The following verses reveal how God had intended for them to be governed.
1. The officers
Deut. 16:18-20 “Judges and officers shalt thou make thee in all thy gates, which the LORD thy God giveth thee, throughout hthy tribes:”
2. Their job description
“and they shall judge the people with just judgment.”
3. Their policies & procedures
“Thou shalt not wrest judgment; thou shalt not respect persons, neither take a gift: for a gift doth blind the eyes of the wise, and pervert the words of the righteous.”
4. The benefits & consequences of God’s standards.
“That which is altogether just shalt thou follow, that thou mayest live, and inherit the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.”
LESSON - God reveals to us in this passage why ALL governments are eventually corrupted, including ours. It’s within the sin nature of every person to show favoritism and desire material gain. It’s the nature of every man to twist words in order to promote one’s own agenda. We MUST elect godly men and women and pray for them regularly! Otherwise, the consequences are death and loss of God’s blessings upon the land He has given us.
