If you could take something that would allow you to live forever, would you take it? Many people who are young and healthy might have a tendency to answer that question with an affirmative “YES”!! However, my father who in his final years of life being stricken with various health issues stemming from the realities of old age and Adam’s curse was not looking to live longer. He longed to go to his eternal home where he would finally be healed AND live forever there. God placed two trees in the midst of the Garden, but only one was off limits. Many have often wondered why Adam did not simply take of the Tree of Life after he had disobeyed God. If he had done so, he would have lived forever with the effects of sin’s curse. It was for this reason God drove him out, so that redemption’s work could begin.
Gen. 2:8-9, 16-17
“And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”
AFTER ADAM & EVE SINNED...
Gen. 3:22-23a “And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden,”
LESSON - Don’t let your heart get accustomed to this world. Though the Tree of Knowledge is gone, it’s roots are still entangled in every part of our lives and will never go away until this world is destroyed once and for all. Train your heart to long for the day when you will FINALLY be free from sin’s curse. That’s when the things of this Earth will no longer matter to you.
