We sin so frequently and in so many ways, we fail to realize how often we offend God many times in complete ignorance. When you begin to consider all the ways in which you sin, you should develop a heart of gratitude towards God for the sufficiency of Jesus’ sacrifice. He was literally willing to take upon Himself our sin and as a result, be sacrificed “outside” the city as an outcast much like the OT sacrifice made outside the veil in the Tabernacle.
V1-2 “And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a soul shall sin through ignorance against any of the commandments of the LORD concerning things which ought not to be done, and shall do against any of them:
V4-6 “And he shall bring the bullock unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD; and shall lay his hand upon the bullock's head, and kill the bullock before the LORD. And the priest that is anointed shall take of the bullock's blood, and bring it to the tabernacle of the congregation: And the priest shall dip his finger in the blood, and sprinkle of the blood seven times before the LORD, before the vail of the sanctuary.”
His sacrifice was made for all because everyone sins, even in ignorance.
1. Individuals
V2 “If a soul shall sin through ignorance against any of the commandments of the LORD concerning things which ought not to be done, and shall do against any of them:”
2. People in ministry
V3a “If the priest that is anointed do sin according to the sin of the people;...”
3. An entire nation
V13 “And if the whole congregation of Israel sin through ignorance, and the thing be hid from the eyes of the assembly, and they have done somewhat against any of the commandments of the LORD concerning things which should not be done, and are guilty;”
4. Rulers & politicians
V22 “When a ruler hath sinned, and done somewhat through ignorance against any of the commandments of the LORD his God concerning things which should not be done, and is guilty;”
5. People from all walks of life
V27 “And if any one of the common people sin through ignorance, while he doeth somewhat against any of the commandments of the LORD concerning things which ought not to be done, and be guilty;”
LESSON - The BEST news for us ALL is found in v35 “the priest shall make an atonement for his sin that he hath committed, and it shall be forgiven him.” His sacrifice was sufficient for our forgiveness! Be thankful to Him, constantly seek forgiveness and cleansing, and stand in the gap for those who sin out of ignorance (our country).
