As we closely examine the 2nd Commandment, the Scripture reveals some interesting things about it. Idols can come in many forms and from multiple places. It’s something that mankind chooses to worship because it appeals to our fleshly senses rather than God whom we have been commanded to worship in spirit and truth which requires faith.
Ex.20:4-6 “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:” IF we allow ourselves to develop a habit of breaking this commandment, this is what we should expect from the god we have created and chosen to serve.
1. Submission
“Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them,”
2. Slavery
“nor serve them:”
3. Strongholds passed onto future generations.
“for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation”
4. A secular worldview
“of them that hate me;”
LESSON - We must realize the reason we commit this sin is because we have chosen to please ourselves rather than the One True God. Our only option if we are to maintain proper fellowship with God while protecting future generations from the same sin is confession and repentance. God offers us a promise in this passage of scripture if we will turn to Him.
“And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.”
Make a choice today to flee your “pet” sin! You may also be freeing your children and grandchildren from a lifetime of sin by choosing to relinquish it’s control over you.
