The remedy for loving “self” is loving God by loving others instead. Everything within me would have me pursue my fleshly temptation to fulfill the sins of Covetousness, Lust, and Pride which are all self-focused. Instead, we should follow Christ’s example.
1. We should love others more than ourselves.
1 Jn. 3:16-17 “Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.”
2. We should share with those in need.
“But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?”
3. We should diligently pray for the needs of others with a spirit of expectancy, if we are obedient.
V22-23 “And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.”
LESSON - Our faith in the Lord Jesus should move us to action. Jesus saw our needs and was moved with compassion to meet them beginning with our greatest one, salvation. We should feel compelled to follow his example.
“And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.”
