Listen to the message, not the messenger!

Updated: Jun 11

BEWARE!! God sees you as you really are.

Mt 23:25-26, 28 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. LESSON - Here Jesus is preaching to the scribes and the Pharisees, the religious community. I think it’s important that we keep in mind that these same people are about to crucify him. A few things come to mind as you examine the lives of these kinds of people from God’s perspective:

1. They have a “do as I say, not as I do” mentality.

2. They are motivated by pride rather than love.

3. In their minds, public persona is more important then integrity.

4. They seek power and control through rules and high standards.

BUT...Jesus begins this passage talking about their message. V3 “All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.” In other words, focus on their message and not their lives. If a message contains truth, you should yield to it because the message is greater than the messenger. Listen to the teaching, not the teacher. Let God’s word change you from within rather than seeking to emulate the one bringing the message.
