Though it is not pleasant to consider, Christianity is all about the blood of Jesus Christ. God made it very clear to the Israelites that blood was not to be wasted or misused. Whether it be animals or humans, God has a specific plan for each and He has given them blood to accomplish His plan.
1. It’s purpose - LIFE & DEATH
Lev. 17:11 “For the life of the flesh is in the blood:”
2. It’s place - THE ALTAR
“and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls:”
3. It’s person - JESUS
“for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.”
LESSON - In this chapter, God made it very clear that the blood of animals was for sacrifice for the sins of the people. It was not to be used for sacrifice to false idols or for personal consumption. It was God who had given the animals life and that life was only be taken for specific reasons. The proper place for the shed blood was the altar in the Tabernacle. The proper purpose was to make atonement for the people. The reason for this was because it all pictured the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. It is His blood that determines whether a person experiences eternal life or death. The altar upon which His blood was shed was The Cross. Even though all blood is significant to God, it is only the shed blood of Jesus which can provide eternal life. It’s all about the blood of Jesus Christ!
