Gen. 28:12-14 “And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it. And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I am the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed; And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.”
-On the road to Haran, God appears to Jacob in a dream which we know as Jacob’s Ladder. According to John 1:43-51, this ladder is a picture of Jesus Christ because He alone reconciled God with man. Jesus, the Messiah would come through the nation of Israel by which all the people of the world will be blessed! God also made a promise to Jacob that he would never leave him. Notice Jacob’s response to God:
V20-22 “And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If (since) God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,”
1. I will seek close fellowship with God again.
“So that I come again to my father's house in peace;”
2. I will remember God and worship Him in His House.
“And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God's house:”
3. He shall be my Savior AND Lord.
“then shall the LORD be my God:”
4. I will return a portion of God’s blessings to His House when I worship.
“and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.”
LESSON - Very soon we will return to God’s house. I pray we will not take it for granted and respond to the Lord as Jacob did. I hope that God’s people will lay down the idols which we have set up on the mantle of our hearts and seek close fellowship with Him. I hope that God’s people will remember how special God’s House is and recall the reverence with which it should be treated. That God’s people everywhere will repent of our sins and be reminded that He is not merely Savior, but also our Lord! I hope that Christians will see as we give of our resources that it is a reflection of us giving our hearts freely to Him so that the work of God will thrive. May we never again take for granted the privilege of worshipping in His presence, in His house, through His word, with His people!
