One of the ongoing debates about the Bible is it’s authorship. Who wrote the Bible, God or man? Although Moses was clearly the identifiable leader of Israel and God’s voice to the people, this one passage of scripture in the OT makes the answer very clear!
1. God gave it!
Num. 36:13 “These are the commandments and the judgments, which the LORD commanded”
2. Man wrote it down!
“by the hand of Moses”
3. God would preserve it through His people.
“unto the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho.”
LESSON - God reiterates this in the NT as well.
1. God has given us all we need to be godly in His word.
2 Pt.1:2-3 “Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:”
2. This time he would preserve His word through the Church instead of Israel.
V4 “Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.”
3. We believe in “Sola Scriptura” which teaches the sufficiency of Scripture as the “only” authority in all matters of doctrine.
2 Tim.3:16-17 “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”
4. All other sources are unnecessary and insufficient for discipleship.
Gal. 1:8 “But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.”
5. There are warnings against changing it.
Rev. 22:18-19 “For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.”
