Even when we receive unjust criticism, if we listen closely we can discern nuggets of truth within the critique. These veiled treasures can prove to be helpful if we are willing to learn from people who may not always speak with full knowledge of our situation. Here are a few statements of truth from Eliphaz’s admonishment of Job:
1. We should expect fiery trials in life.
Job 5:7-9, 17 “Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward.”
2. God should be our 1st & main source of refuge.
“I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause:”
3. We must remember that He is benevolent AND omnipotent.
“Which doeth great things and unsearchable; marvellous things without number”
4. Gods chastening never “feels” good, but the end result is worth it.
“Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty”
LESSON - Healthy self examination will reveal the motivation behind troubles. Sometimes our difficulties will come as consequences due to our sinful actions. Other times our problems we will be trials allowed by God to stretch our faith. The Holy Spirit will work in conjunction with the word of God to reveal the trial’s true purpose. The one thing that remains constant in all of it is the goodness of an Almighty God! If you can remember this principle, every event in life will be an opportunity for growth.
